How does the government keep expecting us to believe marijuana has no medical value when marinol is their reason for not legalizing it?

Marinol and Marijuana
The American prohibition of marijuana has numerous negative consequences. Of all these, the loss of a valuable medical substance has received the most press. Since NORML’s attempt to legalize marijuana in California in the 1970′s failed, they have refocused on medical marijuana. They have had much greater success by playing the medical argument than the personal liberty argument. The medical marijuana argument has met with success outside of California. States such as New York and New Jersey are now pursuing medical marijuana programs.

Despite the growing evidence, our Federal Government has steadfastly maintained that medical marijuana has no medical value. As recently as mid-July, the DEA came out with another statement repeating the mantra of “marijuana has no medical value.” It is obvious to anyone who objectively looks at the situation that marijuana comes close to working miracles as a medicine. The drug companies are the one who donate to Partnership for a Drug Free America. They are the ones who are trying to keep this medicine off the market.
It is not the marijuana, a drug that is also medicine, bothers them. Heroin was originally made by Bayer as a headache medicine. What bothers them is that marijuana is not like opiates, which are easy to process, synthesize, and therefore patent. Marijuana can be grown in a sick person’s back yard. This could keep a person in year round supply of medicine for free.
Marinol and Marijuana
If you doubt this to be true, look at Marinol. Marinol is a synthesized form of the THC molecule that has been patented and sold to help with symptoms of chemotherapy. Marinol is the same atomic structure as THC, but because it was made in a lab and not in a plant it is good for you. A common line is that Marinol does not get you high like marijuana does. The listed side effects would disagree: confusion, decreased coordination, dizziness, drowsiness, elevated or relaxed mood, trouble concentrating. That sounds like a high to me! Somehow they expect us to believe that Marinol is medicine, but marijuana is not.
When will people learn to stop accepting the government’s drug war double speak? The government will continue reporting lies on marijuana for as long as it can get away with them. Only an informed electorate can change the way their government behaves. Our politicians only have to have a conscience if hold them accountable. While they may not see the relief that marijuana can give a sick man in Washington, our local states and cities will listen to their citizens. Prohibition will end on the state level and the federal level will become irrelevant.
