Pullman police arrested two football players from Washington State on early Sunday morning after discovering marijuana plants in their house they rented with two other people.
Jamal Atofau and Andre Barrington were arrested along with Bailey Woods and Zachary Uttech when Pullman police found 38 plants in the house they were renting. The two freshman were arrested after the police arrived at the home on Lower Drive with an unrelated search warrant.
While police conducted their search, they discovered the marijuana plants growing in the basement of the home. They quickly obtained a drug-related warrant, searched the basement, found plants, manufacturing equipment and paraphernalia. All four residents were arrested after the plants were found.
Commander Chris Tennant said, “Thirty-eight plants in a residence is quite a big deal for us.” The four were taken to the Pullman police station where they were booked and released on their own recognizance.
Atofau has been suspended from team activities until WSU can gain full information on the situation. Barrington was not suspended because he has already been ineligible due to grades. All four men were charged with a violation of the uniform controlled substance act, the severity of which depends on the weight of the marijuana found. The police will determine the weight of the drug once it has fully dried.
