Colorado is one of the 14 states that allow citizens to smoke medical marijuana legally. As medical marijuana is becoming more accessible in Colorado, the state bureaucrats are urging state legislature in waiving the applications fee. Right now the application fee is $90 for the state’s medical marijuana registry. The Rocky Mountain state is trying to waive that fee based on that fact that poor people can’t afford it. So if you’re poor in the state of Colorado then you can get this fee waived.
Not everybody is happy about this though; critics argue that the program isn’t as encompassing as they’d like it to be. Paradoxically, spending all that money on the medical marijuana might be why some people can’t afford the application fee in the first place.
Damien Lagoy, a medical marijuana patient with HIV, says he makes $14 a month, which is to much to qualify for the necessary programs to receive a fee waiver. Lagoy says he has rent, food, health, and marijuana payments, which lead him with too little money left over to afford the fee.
I’m sure this is the case for a lot of people, as the economy has got worse. People need their medicine and they need jobs. I think full legalization is where we need to be so that people like Lagoy can get a job and be able to pay for the medicine he needs.
